Mark Harrast, MD

Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Center at Husky Stadium

Mark Harrast, MD

Dr. Harrast is a sports medicine physician and medical director of the Sports Medicine Center at Husky Stadium. He is also the medical director of the Seattle Marathon and was voted as a Seattle Met Magazine Top Doctor in 2014. His clinical expertise is diagnosing and treating sports-related injuries and illnesses in endurance athletes, runners and triathletes. He also has a focus on injury prevention and wellness. He enjoys treating athletes and active people throughout the age spectrum.

He works closely with many rehabilitation professionals, including physical therapists, athletic trainers, coaches, massage therapists and nutritionists to individualize the treatment plan of care for each of his patients, depending on the significance and severity of the injury or illness.

As both a competitive distance runner and Ironman triathlete himself, Dr. Harrast understands first-hand the benefits of physical activity and the desire to stay active. Therefore, a focus of each patient encounter is to return his patients to their sport or activity quickly, safely and better educated to prevent future injury. Complementing his clinical work at UW Medicine, he speaks nationally and internationally on medical issues and injuries related to marathon and triathlon training and racing. He is also frequently published in sports medicine journals and is the editor of a top-rated sports medicine review text.

He joined the faculty of the UW Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine and Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in 2001. He graduated with honors from the University of Chicago and obtained his medical degree from Northwestern University. He was elected chief resident during his residency at UW and was honored with the "Outstanding Resident Award" at graduation. He was also more recently honored with an "Outstanding Teacher Award." Prior to returning to Seattle, he completed a fellowship in sports and spine medicine at the University of Michigan.
