Thomas Bird, MD

Dr. Bird is professor of neurology and medicine (medical genetics) and an adjunct professor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences. His special area of interest is neurogenetics.

Dr. Bird is a native of Western New York State, received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College (Phi Beta Kappa) and his M.D. from Cornell Medical College in New York City. He did his internship and neurology residency at the University of Washington followed by a fellowship in medical genetics.

Dr. Bird has been on the UW neurology and medical genetics faculties for more than 35 years. He has often been cited as a “top doctor” in Seattle and was the director of the UW Neurogenetics Clinic for 40 years. He was also chief of the neurology section of the Seattle VA Medical Center for 12 years. He is now retired from clinical practice, but still actively engaged in research.

He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association and the American Society of Human Genetics. He has received several national awards including the Wartenberg Lectureship from the AAN, the Jacoby Award from the ANA and the Middleton Research Award from the VA.
