Donor Heart Infected with Hepatitis C Saves Man's Life

Washington resident opts into UW Medicine’s HCV heart protocol with great success. Kerry Hayes was the first in the Pacific Northwest to do so, and says he would do it again, as UW Medical Center's new protocol saved his life. Heart-transplant candidates can opt in to be considered for matching donor organs even if the organ is infected with hep C, and then take an eight-week course of medication to clear the virus.
